Alexander Beardmore, Electrical Engineer for Briggs & Forrester Engineering Services, explains the attraction of the proposed PWC and our Lighting Control System.

The hospital in Nottingham is the latest addition to the 38-strong Spire hospital portfolio and we have worked alongside main M&E contractor, Briggs & Forrester and system consultant, Parker Wilson Consulting (PWC) to devise a lighting control system that meets the requirements of the hospital.

These requirements include flexible control of light levels in bedrooms and an ability to scene set at bedsides, as well as the corridor spotlight lighting specification.

Alexander Beardmore is Electrical Engineer for Briggs & Forrester Engineering Services and explains the attraction of the proposed PWC and our solution: “Following receipt of a number of lighting control system proposals and suggested contractors, we liked the fact that Hager was able to offer a ‘one-stop lighting control system solution’ for the whole project. This suited our team’s philosophy to minimise the overall number of interfaces on the project, so we could benefit from good communication when issues arose.”

An integral part of the installation success was our ability to satisfy Briggs & Forrester’s request that all the lighting control module boxes (LCMs) be pre-commissioned and all pre-programming carried out off-site. Colin Hughes, our Commercial Specification & Key Account Manager, explains more:

“Our extensive experience of pre-programming off-site supported the installation phase, ensuring contractor time on site was highly efficient and helped with Briggs’ desire to minimise the cost associated with commissioning. We prepared each unit based upon available information provided. Room functions and switching requirements were known in advance and units were delivered to the construction site with all the associated components for each bedroom marked up in its individual box. This not only removed any potential for the confusion but cut installation time and cost to a minimum.”

Involved in the Klik lighting connection system design from an early stage, we assisted with the specification process having established an excellent working relationship with the design consultants on previous projects.

Such was the success of the original design stage that we were also asked to extend its involvement from just the main bedroom lighting controls to the building’s full lighting control system. The project now encompassed all other areas of the building such as corridors, meeting rooms and treatment facilities.

Alexander Beardmore for Briggs & Forrester, comments: “After meeting Hager during the pre-construction phase of the project, we felt confident in their ability to assist us. Hager personnel were ever-present throughout the project and their insight, expertise and lighting solutions were highly beneficial in helping us achieve the design goals we set and maximise the installation efficiencies we sought. Hager has been very helpful throughout the whole process and displayed flexibility when we have had to incorporate changes.”
