Power surge protection

Keeping people and property safe.
Power surges are the main cause of defects in electronic devices – with claims of over 200 million euros per year. Therefore, power surge protection devices are a must for safe electrical installation: in all buildings, all over the world.

Surge protection

Surge protection devices (SPDs) protect electrical installations and terminal equipment from overvoltages. They serve for preventive fire protection, significantly for object and building protection, increase the availability of the installation and – that is the most important - protect people from injury and worse.

The most vulnerable

  • all electrical appliances in the home and office, public buildings and national monuments: general disruption and replacement costs (if not covered by insurance)
  • cell towers: network downtime
  • IT server centers: affecting data transfer and storage
  • specialized buildings: using sensitive electronics such as laboratories and banks
  • antennas: signal transmission disruptions

Overvoltages and phenomenal impacts

Overvoltages can be very different: They can last microseconds or days, have amplitudes of millivolts or thousands of volts. What makes these transient surges dangerous is the sudden voltage rise and the high voltage difference.

The main causes of overvoltages

  • lightning strikes (LEMPs)
  • electrostatic discharges (ESDs)
  • switching operations (SEMPs)

Protecting human lives

Main benefits at a glance:

  • simple retrofitting
  • norm-compliant range
  • less complexity, more ability
  • easy to choose the right one
  • safe and easy to install
  • proven functionalities
  • excellent results

The three types of surge protection devices

Type 1: Lightning current arrester

Diverts the energy content of the lightning and reduces the residual voltage to < 1,500 V.

Type 2: Surge protection

Reduces the remaining overvoltage to < 1,500 V.

Type 3: Surge protection for terminals

Reduces the remaining overvoltages to < 1,500 V, which is uncritical for end devices.

Protection technology from a single source

With Hager’s surge protection range, all normative requirements can be implemented simply and safely. The range includes combined SPDs Types 1, 2 and 3 for all main types, as well as surge protection devices for the protection of multimedia and communication devices.

In doing so, we follow the motto: less is more. We have reduced the number of variants and made the portfolio more manageable. Fewer products now cover even more applications.

Combine and reinforce

Current Hager surge protection devices are fully compatible with existing products and can be easily combined in existing projects without any issues.

Combined surge protection devices (Type 1 + Type 2) are available with cutting edge Spark Gap Technology. The main area of use is in the supply area of the electrical system.

Surge protection devices of Type 2 are installed downstream of a Type 1 or an installed combined surge protection device. This is usually done at distribution level - i.e. in sub-distribution boards from which the final circuits are supplied.
Type 3 surge protection devices are used for end-device protection. Since they are installed in the vicinity of the device or system to be protected, there are many designs for the Type 3. Integrated in SCHUKO® sockets, for DIN-rail mounting and for mounting in switch/branch boxes.

Level of
protection

Overvoltage arresters protect against

transient overvoltages which may cause the

deterioration of electrical equipment and the

destruction of the electronic components of

the receivers. They can be used in all

earthing systems (neutral point system).

Norm-compliant range

All Hager surge protection devices meet the applicable standards of IEC 62305-3 and IEC 60364-5-53 and are compliant with the lightning protection requirements defined in IEC 62305.

Commercial building protection

As the energy demand of buildings increases, so do the requirements for surge protection. Analogue to apartment buildings, the VdS guideline “Risk-oriented lightning and surge protection” VdS 2010:2021-02 should be consulted for assistance. This is also relevant for the compliance of functional buildings in reference to the lightning protection class. The requirements set out here apply to the vast majority of functional buildings.

Residential
building protection

Lightning protection is not usually required for single-family homes. This means that often, no external lightning conductor is installed. In this case, only the IEC 60364-4-44 is applicable for protection against sur- ges in this area. As the simplest way to comply with the normative minimums, Hager recommends installing its combi- nation arresters in the mains-side near the service entrance. If the cable length of ten metres is exceeded, for example to the sub-distribution, the standard recommends additional surge arresters Type 2 and 3.
